Milk includes many nutrients that benefit your child’s dental health. It is full of vitamins, minerals, and proteins that help your teeth and gums. These fortifying ingredients work together to fight inflammation, strengthen enamel, and lower your child’s risk of gum disease and tooth decay, resulting in a strong, healthy smile.

How Much Milk Should Kids Drink?

Between ages 12 to 24 months, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry suggests 2 to 3 cups of plain milk per day. From ages 2 to 5, they recommend 2 cups of plain milk per day. Talk to your child’s pediatric dentist at their next visit to determine the appropriate amount of milk for your child.

While you might be concerned about the sugar content in dairy, there’s no need to worry! The nutrients in milk contain cavity-fighting properties, and it’s a great alternative to soda or sport drinks when your child is thirsty for something other than water. Continue to have your child brush their teeth twice a day and floss daily for optimal oral care.

Alternatives to Drinking Milk

Dairy products like yogurt, cheese, ice cream, and frozen yogurt are a few tasty alternatives to drinking milk. If your child is lactose intolerant, or if they don’t like milk, calcium-fortified soy milk is an alternative to cow’s milk that has a great source of calcium. Talk to your child’s pediatrician about the best dairy alternatives for their needs.

You can also add fish that are high in vitamin D and calcium, like salmon and tuna, to your child’s diet. If your family eats a vegetarian diet, tofu and kale are great options to help you include more vitamin D and calcium in your diet.
